According to the Dallas News, the tolling authority has begun adjusting its signs to better get the attention of drunken drivers. This is because many accidents have occurred due to deadly wrong-way crashes on area toll roads. According to the North Texas Tollway Authority, intoxicated people tend to look down while driving. Due to this fact, crews began lowering warning signs.
“Incidents of wrong-way driving happen every day,” said Marty Legé, head of the NTTA’s Wrong-Way Driver Task Force. “With these signs, we’re going to be able to get their attention.” While sober drivers who enter highways going the wrong way usually realize their mistake before causing an accident, drunken drivers need stronger visual cues. So under a two-year initiative, several “wrong way” and “do not enter” signs will be lowered from the standard height of 7 feet to 2 feet, and some will be ringed by flashing red LEDs.
Getting approval to lower the signs was no easy, officials said. Legé explained that the Texas Transportation Institute spent about $105,000 on crash testing to determine the best placement for road signs before lowering them. In addition, the authority has since reprogrammed pavement sensors built into the roads near each toll checkpoint to signal when a vehicle is moving in the wrong direction. They also now use electronic message boards along its roads to alert drivers when a wrong-way driver has been detected.
