As our nation becomes more technologically advanced, the more dangerous some areas of our lives become, especially when driving is involved. Many teenagers and adults send or read a text message while driving, which is highly unsafe and even fatal. However, according to The Insurance Journal, Texas Gov. Rick Perry vetoed 23 bills on June 17, including legislation that would have outlawed sending or reading text messages while driving.
Lawmakers approved the texting ban last month, but Perry called it an “overreach” and “government effort to micromanage the behavior of adults.” The bill triggered more than a half an hour of debate with opponents about whether or not the bill would criminalize drivers for simply receiving a text message while driving. Furthermore, San Antonio and El Paso already have laws forbidding texting while driving, and at least 30 states have enacted similar bans. “The keys to dissuading drivers of all ages from texting while driving are information and education,” Perry said in his veto statement. “I recommend additional education on this issue in driving safety and driver’s education courses, public service ads, and announcements...”
Although it is important for all drivers to take the rules of the road seriously, it is easy to forget what they are when they don’t have consequences attached to them. Whether taking driver’s education classes or seeing an advertisement about texting while driving, it is not enough to just say “stop doing it”. Not everyone wears their seatbelts and not everyone obeys the speed limit. However, if a police officer pulls you over for such an infraction, then it becomes more of a reality. This is why a bill prohibiting the act would have been effective in protecting the community from careless drivers.
